STYLE FILES – Countertops To Top Off Any Room

Brock Design Group

Portland OR. Interior Design Blog

Walking into a kitchen or bathroom, usually the first thing to grab your eye is the countertop – marble, quartz, stainless steel, glass, wood.  An expanse of beautiful material makes you want to run your hand across it and soak it into your senses.

STYLE FILES – Kitchen Space Savers and Clutter Busters

Portland OR. Interior Design Company

I love a crisp clean kitchen, where clutter is kept to a minimum.  I want clear counters and tools that are easily accessible.  Today we are going to look at some great space savers so you and your kitchen can work together in harmony!

It’s no secret that I love my morning coffee!  My clients that are coffee and tea drinkers are always happy when we incorporate a“coffee bar” into the design!

Make your walls do some work!

Those clunky pots and pans and chunky knife blocks take up a lot of space, so find a place other than the countertops to store them.

STYLE FILES – Wallpaper is “Hanging” Around

Portland OR. Interior Design Company

For years now, wallpaper has had to live with a negative connotation.  Even interior designers, who could appreciate the virtues of wallpaper’s textures and decorating qualities, declared wallpaper outdated.  Guess what?  It’s back and with a beautiful, bold vengeance.  I’m not sure that I am ready to cover my entire house with wallpaper, after living through the 80′s style of grapevine-floral wallpaper.  I am so excited to dip my toes back in the water with a small powder room or large statement wall.  With the vast array of choices out there, there’s no reason why you can’t find a great wallpaper to either make a bold statement on one wall or subtle cover for the entire room.

STYLE FILES – Making Your Guest Feel Welcome

Portland OR. Interior Design Company

When my home is filled with family and friends coming from out of town for a visit, I love finding little ways that help them feel welcome for their stay.  Here are some beautiful guest rooms for inspiration and a few favorite ways to help my guests feel that extra touch of love.

Screen shot 2012 12 04 at 7.31.41 AM STYLE FILES Making Your Guest Feel WelcomeImage via Brock Designs Group

TIP: Light it up – Have a great bedside lamp for guests to read in bed and wind down.   When you aren’t familiar with the layout of the bedroom, turning out the light at the door can cause some stubbed toes!  You can also add that special little touch of leaving some of your favorite books on the night stand for your guests.

TIP: Essentials – Leave a few essentials in the room to make it more convenient for your guest, a few bottles of water, towels and a clock to name just a few.

TIP: Add Fresh Linens – Putting fresh and clean linens on the bed will give that luxury hotel feel.  Don’t forget to add an extra quilt or blanket on the end of the bed for those cold nights.

TIP: Get rid of as much clutter as you can to make it feel simply and fresh.

TIP: Create room in a closet for your guest to hang their clothes and stow away their belongings.

STYLE FILES – Decorating in Small Spaces

Portland OR. Interior Design Company

If you feel the need to stretch out in your small space, we have some decorating tips to make the area look and feel larger without moving any walls! With color, furniture arranging, and interesting lighting, your space won’t feel so cramped.

Screen shot 2012 11 04 at 9.06.03 PM STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via House Beautiful

These tips will work for your small space.

  • Clear Out the ClutterScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 6.36.16 AM 300x224 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via Quality Bath
There’s nothing that makes a small space feel cramped more than having too much stuff. Work out ways to get collections out of view, organized behind doors and table skirts, or on shelves. With things neatly arranged and out of sight, the space that is in view will feel orderly and open.

  • Open the WayScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 6.39.18 AM 300x249 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via National Association of Home Builders
With furniture and accessories blocking the view into a room and out to open spaces, a room will look cramped. By moving furniture out and away from walkways, you’ll open up the space and make it feel larger. You can also choose short pieces of furniture like an ottoman, an armless, open chair, or a low table, and place large, tall pieces along a wall rather than out in the open space. If you can see the floor, the room will look larger.

  • Choose Soft, Light HuesScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 6.25.35 AM 284x300 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via Examiner
Whereas dark, warm colors make a space feel cozy and intimate, light, cool colors make a space feel open and airy. For optimum effect, select soft tones of blues and greens.

  • Use a Monochromatic Color SchemeScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 6.43.23 AM 253x300 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via Eclectic Revisited
Choose colors that are in the same color family.  Cool colors and delicate warm colors on most surfaces give the room a more open look.

  • Coordinate Wall and Furniture ColorsScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 6.31.57 AM 300x231 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via About.com
Contrasting colors tend to break up a space. Pieces of furniture are less interrupting and tend to blend with the space if they’re colored to match the wall color.

  • Let in the LightScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 6.50.02 AM 272x300 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via Daily Dream Decor
Any room will look larger if it’s well-lit, either by natural light or artificial lighting. Get rid of heavy draperies and open up the windows to let the light of the outdoors into the space. Add more lamps or install track lighting or recessed lighting.  Check out our DIY: The Well Lit Room blog from last week for even more help in this area!

  • Reflective SurfacesScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 7.23.46 AM 300x194 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via Freshome
You might not like the look of a mirrored wall.  Instead, use a large framed mirror on a wall or stand an over-sized framed mirror against a wall. You’ll get the same room-enlarging effect as a mirrored wall, but with more style. The space and the light will be reflected for a more open feeling.

  • Airy, Light FabricsScreen shot 2012 11 05 at 6.59.42 AM 300x197 STYLE FILES Decorating in Small SpacesImage via Devine Decorating Results

Sheer fabrics allow light to pass through window treatments, bed skirts, table covers, and furniture slipcovers. If you want something other than plain colors, find soft floral vines or simple stripes to keep the look simple.

If you follow some of these simple rules about decorating a small space, your home will feel comfortable, not cramped. You’ll have an intimate space that suits all your needs.

DIY : Organize and Simplify Your Laundry Room

Brock Designs, Portland OR. Interior Design Company

On Tuesday, I hopefully inspired you with some pictures of luxurious laundry rooms.  Today, I am going to give you some fabulous DIY and organization projects that you can easily get done over the weekend and still have plenty of time to relax.

The first project is a washer and dryer pedestal like the one pictured below.  This is a fantastic way to get those pesky laundry baskets out from under our feet and all over the house as well as to keep it easy and organized to start a load or two, not to mention raising the machines to make it easier on the back!

You can get the shopping list and detailed instructions to make this wonderful pedestal here.

This “Drying Rack” (a painted ladder) gives you so much space and saves you from throwing your clothes over the top of the door to dry!

So simple right?  Just paint an old wooden ladder, attach chains to it and the ceiling and voila….a perfect place to dry your delicate attire!

Or you can add a simple closet rod from wall to cabinet like this one.

Screen shot 2012 01 04 at 2.57.45 PM DIY : Organize and Simplify Your Laundry Room

A effortless shelf mounted above your machines will create the space you need for all of your detergents and miscellaneous items at an arms reach…and what a beautiful wall color against the white cabinetry!

These perfect little baskets with mini chalkboards on them (which can be made with small pieces of wood and chalkboard paint) are great for those items that you need on hand for whenever they are needed.

For those of us that keep all of our cleaning supplies in the laundry room, here is a great way to keep them organized and easy to find.

Screen shot 2012 01 04 at 2.50.01 PM DIY : Organize and Simplify Your Laundry RoomImage via Houzz

These “towel rods” and hooks can be found at Ikea…simple!

I hope that these simple little projects will motivate you to get up and get organized and make some more space for yourself.  I know what I am going to be doing this weekend and I cannot wait!

Make it a great day,
