With the sun finally starting to peak through the spring clouds, I’m anxious to spend more time outside.  I love taking a cup of coffee, my laptop and sunglasses out on to the back deck to enjoy the warm weather and fresh air.  We went browsing for some out of this world outdoor spaces and wanted to show you our favorites.  These may be what most of us could only dream about, but they give me inspiration to spruce my little patio up and get out there and enjoy it!   Let’s face it, sometimes the best vacation spot is in your own backyard.

STYLE FILES – Color Me Happy With Pastels

As we learned in last years’ Perfectly Pastels post, these lovely soft colors have always worked in kids’ rooms but started to venture to other rooms in the house.  We are now seeing a trend with pastels.  They are transforming to a more modern hue in today’s home designs.

DIY – Inexpensive Homemade Gifts

During the holidays, I love to make gifts from my kitchen.  Some of us get overwhelmed with the thought of making our own gifts because we think that it’s too time consuming or difficult.  I have found a few easy to make gifts that my family and friends are very happy to receive.  Here are a few of my most recent homemade gifts:

  • A Family Directory, with family info, birthday’s and old pictures
  • Special homemade vanilla made 4 months before Christmas using Madagascar vanilla beans and water, sugar and sometimes vodka.  I used inexpensive bottles from IKEA with a rubber stopper and gifted them with a ribbon tied around the neck and holding a beautiful tag
  • A delicious Mediterranean Rub for meats with a few recipes attached, like this one below.  I used a glass jar from IKEA and added a ribbon and customized label with the ingredients (in case of allergies)

And one that I am currently working on is a family recipe cookbook.  Coming from a family of 8, we all are inputting our most memorable recipes from our childhood.  I have also found the following DIY gifts that seem easy enough for us to try and would be great to give as gifts!

COLOR PALETTE – Winter White

I love it when the first snow falls and covers the city in a glistening winter white – so pure and clean- a backdrop to interesting architecture, color and texture.  It is peaceful.  Using white inside your home can be so beautiful.  It doesn’t have to be boring or drab.  White can be beautiful, warm, clean and elegant.  It can easily mix different styles together and create a cohesive design plan.

STYLE FILES – Making Your Guest Feel Welcome

When my home is filled with family and friends coming from out of town for a visit, I love finding little ways that help them feel welcome for their stay.  Here are some beautiful guest rooms for inspiration and a few favorite ways to help my guests feel that extra touch of love.

TIP: Light it up – Have a great bedside lamp for guests to read in bed and wind down.   When you aren’t familiar with the layout of the bedroom, turning out the light at the door can cause some stubbed toes!  You can also add that special little touch of leaving some of your favorite books on the night stand for your guests.

TIP: Essentials – Leave a few essentials in the room to make it more convenient for your guest, a few bottles of water, towels and a clock to name just a few.

TIP: Add Fresh Linens – Putting fresh and clean linens on the bed will give that luxury hotel feel.  Don’t forget to add an extra quilt or blanket on the end of the bed for those cold nights.

TIP: Get rid of as much clutter as you can to make it feel simply and fresh.
